When we learn about non-invasive, useful ways to prevent and/or relieve a number of the physical ailments we suffer, often we decline to take advantage of them.
For instance, It’s time-consuming and sometimes more expensive to read food labels and avoid foods that seem to exacerbate the symptoms of arthritis. It’s much easier to have a bag of popcorn for dinner, massage our aching hands, and damage the lining of our stomach by taking ibuprofen to relieve the ache.
Why do people do this (including me), especially those who claim to believe that they are supposed to be “good stewards” (good caretakers) of everything God gives them? This would, of course, include our own bodies.
Most medical miracles—antibiotics, NSAIDS, etc., are meant to be used for acute, not chronic, medical conditions. They are not meant to be taken day after day for weeks and months. Constant use of these things damages the body. Same goes for most “treats” that we now eat as if they are meant to be daily nourishment.
Go ahead, try this experiment. Ingest ibuprofen according to directions for three days in a row. Then ingest chocolate candy (or popcorn or ice cream) on a similar schedule for three days in a row. What will this regimen do for the condition of the human body?
That’s right. Screw things up very nicely.
That doesn’t mean ibuprofen or chocolate (or popcorn or ice cream) should be shunned. They have their purposes, none of which include going down our gullets on a regular basis in large amounts.
But we in the United States are so conditioned to think that a little medicine or sugar in a specific situation is good, so a lot in every situation must be very good.
I certainly need to stop thinking this way when it comes to taking care of myself, even if it means swimming against the cultural tide. But will I make the effort? Do I?
People are willing to go through hours of crap to try and drive cancer into oblivion with surgery and radiation and chemotherapy. Why are we not willing to do a few less demanding, less invasive, much less painful things NOW that will reduce our chances of getting cancer or any other serious diseases?
Why do we, why do I resist, for instance, going to bed on time? Drinking enough water? Taking a walk when I need one? Eating when I’m hungry and stopping when I’m not? How can screwing myself over like this ever be of benefit?
